Scour Trace Online
Whether we realize it or not, internet users leave a trail of data that is monitored by global companies to be used. Me and My Shadow shows how we can protect online privacy.

Facebook has about 1.1 billion users and Twitter around 200 million people on Twitter. Millions of people also diligently shop at Amazon or other shopping portals. But only a few people who actually read the 'deal' with elaborate written long before clicking "I agree" and put home address, e-mail, telephone number or credit card data.
Internet portals Me and My Shadow, the project belongs to Tactical Technology Collective, can keep track of what information is left out when someone signs up for the service online, surf the Internet, when shopping online and sending messages via mobile phones. This project was awarded The Bobs, 2013 - Best Online Activism - to the category Most Creative and Original.

"We make Me and My Shadow to try to answer questions about the digital traces left by activists and journalists, but also by anyone who uses the Internet," said Stephanie Hankey, executive director and co-founder of Tactical Tech, told DW.

When mengtahui digital traces that have been abandoned, said Hankey, appears two groups of Internet users. The first are those who do not care about how their information can be used the other party and, aware or not, this personal information can be traded for the benefit of others. Second group are those who panicked when he learned, what they think is actually private property also can be used by many people and companies.

From the annoying to the Dangerous
Personal data, including a list of shopping and traveling, geographic location, as well as photos, videos and comments are included in the online, others used and traded, can be categorized into two: obnoxious and dangerous. "One thing that is annoying when we just booked a flight and the next day when we look for something on the internet appears on hotels or restaurants in our destination city," said Stephanie Hankey. "Maybe this is not something that is harmless, but annoying."

On the other hand, he added, this may pose a risk, if the metadata on the photos posted in online also included information about the geographical location of photo makers. "If you take a photo or politically documenting something, it's risky," said Hankey.
"We try to separate, what is annoying and what is dangerous," said Hankey. He added that the online privacy settings can help Internet users protect their privacy. We just have to choose the settings that we consider safe enough for us.
"For example, setting dangerous for a journalist or a blogger or an activist is the same arrangement that allows an ordinary mother upload family photos," said Hankey.

Stay Online
Stephanie Hankey said, Tactical Tech is planning to develop the project Me and My Shadow by adding other language services that will facilitate internet users to evaluate how much of their personal data can be protected in the virtual space.

"We want to facilitate internet users to make their own assessment," said Hankey. "We want to help people to think about what they can do to protect yourself active and knowing what they can change."
